Click here for information on how to place your order through the mail.

Do I have to place my order online or can I send my order and payment by mail?

Either is fine for placing your order. For information about online ordering and purchasing, see how to place your order online through Paypal.

For information on sending your order through the mail, see how to place your order by mail. Be aware that your illustration work will not begin until your payment has been received and cleared.

After I've received my spot illustration, can I place another order later on for a different pallete or for additional products?

Repeat orders are welcome and encouraged! Just order the illustration or product you want, make your payment, and include a note about your previous order so we know exactly which illustration to attach to the order. You won't need to send your image file again.

Your final illustrations are 8" tall. Can I get a larger size?

Your final jpg image file is 8" tall and 300 ppi. This will give you a good quality 8" print. The illustrations created are scaleable to some degree. However, if you want a larger image file size, or a smaller size (scaling your file doesn't quite work for your needs), we'll be happy to create a file for you that matches your need. For larger images, your illustration will be scaled to your requested size and refined as needed. Larger images are available by request only for an additional fee. These qualify as "custom sizes" and will require a separate request and payment. Send an email with specifics for a price quote and timeline.

spot illustrations
What is a spot illustration?

A spot illustration is a fully contained single image that can be duplicated and reused. See more information on commercial usage rights and terms and conditions.

Can I place have more than one pet in my spot illustration?

Yes. We can create a final image for you that includes multiple pets. This type of order is considered a custom order. Order each pet spot illustration separately and, if you want to have a "group" image created when those are complete (or at the time of completion for individual illustrations), send us a note to request a custom group illustration. Make sure to include your pet's names and the date you submitted your order. With a custom order, you can easily have a single image that showcases your pets in a single image for a one-time fee.

When your inquiry email is received, you will be sent a quote outlining the cost. This is typically around $10 (for the standard 8" final image height). However, to ensure an accurate quote, and to give us the opportunity to clarify whether or not what you really want is something larger than the standard image size, quoting these types of requests individually is crucial. Keep in mind that the more pets included in your standard 8" space, the smaller each image may become.

BE AWARE: Although, your pets do not need to be in the same image for a "group shot" to be created, the lighting - framing - and perspective of the images provided may dictate how your final group image is composed. For these reasons and others, we require that you send us a note with specific information about what you're looking for so an accurate quote can be given.

Do you do spot illustrations of people?

Yes. We can create people portraits using the spot illustration style, but because of the potential for the illustrations to take on more of a "cartoon" quality rather than the traditional portrait look most people envision, these are only done on a limited basis. Here are a few examples. If you are interested in this option, send an email to discuss pricing. We are happy to respond to any inquiries.

palettes and colors
Can i choose my own colors?

Not really. Your pet's coloring will determine the colors used in the spot illustration. However, if you choose a complete illustration option that includes background elements from your photo and wish to request a general background color or theme, then you can recommend color options for those elements.

my final image
What exactly will I receive for my money? Is it just the digital file or do I get a printed copy?

When you purchase a spot illustration you receive a digital file. You will receive a jpeg image file. JPG files are a universally recognized image file format and can be opened on almost any computer and placed into almost any kind of software that supports placing or importing image files. This file is yours to use for any kind of personal expression you can imagine.

If you want prints, we do offer two standard print sizes to purchase separately (either with your initial illustration order or a repeat order later). See print options.

Keep in mind that these images are for personal use only (see terms and conditions for more information on copyrights). If you are thinking of using your pet's illustration for commercial use, contact us to discuss what it might cost to purchase limited commercial reproduction rights.

Your site says my final image will be 8" high. I'm not sure I understand what that means.

The width of your final image will be determined by the image provided to work from. For example, if your image has your pet sitting up and looking straight at the camera (example 1) the final image will be 8" high, but may only be 4-5" wide. But, if your image has your pet lying down in a horizontal pose or a standing side shot (example 2), the final image will be 8" high, but may be 11" or more inches wide.

What is the best resolution and file size for digital photos?

When sending your image files, ideally you should send them at a resolution of 300ppi (pixels per inch), or a file size of 1MB or higher is a good rule of thumb to go by for size. I have several photos of my pet, and I can't choose between them. Can I get your opinion?

If you can't choose, you can send up to 3 different image choices with your order. The best one to work from will be chosen from the three. If you prefer that we coordinate the final choice with you before work begins), be advised that this will impact your final completion date (may push it out a few days later depending on your response time).

Can I get a proof of my pet in all the different spot illustration palettes? I can't choose and i really want to see them first before I commit.

Yes, that can be done for additional fees. The time to create them will be the same as for any spot illustration order. Proofs available include: limited palette, black and while line art, and grayscale translation only. In order to be able to receive proofs in these palettes, you must order the full color palette spot illustration (with full payment). There will be a $10.00 fee for each spot illustration proof beyond the original illustration ordered and the proofs you receive will be copymarked. To request additional proofs of your illustration, send us a note and include your name, your pet's name, and the date your full color palette illustration was purchased. Your request will be responded to within 2-3 business days with further instructions on how to submit your payment.

Once payment is received, you will be sent your palette proofs within 24 hours. Proofs will not be sent until payment is received.

Once you choose from these proofs, you can then request the final copymark-free illustration files in the palette of your choice at the full listed price for each one chosen minus the $10 proof charge. Once payment is received for these additional illustrations, your copymark-free image files will be sent. Note: the additional files will not be sent to you until full payment is received.

What are my copyrights to the spot illustration you create?

As outlined in terms and conditions, you are free to use your illustration(s) for any type of personal expression you can imagine. However, illustrated paws retains all original and commercial use copyrights to illustrations created.

illustrated paws does offer the option to purchase either limited commercial usage rights or purchasing the original artwork (which includes full commercial usage rights). These are determined on an individual request-by-request basis. Send an email if you wish to discuss either of these options further.

Be Aware: All commercial copyright usage agreements and original artwork transactions are determined on a individual basis and will mandate compliance to all documented usage agreements. Essentially ~ if either of these two options are chosen, agreement forms will be need to be drafted and exchanged as required. Agreements will not become valid and binding until all forms are signed and dated and all payments are received. Just keep in mind that this process may take a significant amount of time to complete.

What makes something I use it for a copyright infringement (violation)?

This is good general knowledge to have for anyone who uses, copies or alters pre-existing images (someone else created them). Generally speaking, if you use an image created by anyone else and that usage directly or indirectly puts money into your pocket or takes money out of theirs - you are guilty of copyright infringement. If you alter an existing image and walk up to someone on the street, show them both images (the original and your version) and they think they even remotely look the same - you are guilty of copyright infringement.

Image copyrights can be a tricky issue, so the best rule of thumb is just don't do it. If you want more information on copyrights, just do a search on the web or check your local library (make sure it's a recent edition because they are constantly changing). There is a ton of information available on the subject.
